Last week, I spoke briefly of traditions whilst documenting my experience of Portsmouth's Victorian Festival of Christmas and since then I've been noticing just how many traditions I've continued over the years and equally, how many have unknowingly come to an end. Thankfully, one that seems to be here to stay, is travelling to Bath at the beginning of December each year. Shopping, visiting the Christmas markets and admiring the architecture has been a constant, but a new addition to the tradition has been staying at the Abbey Hotel overnight.
Although I wasn't entirely aware of it at the time, I was coming down with a nasty cold and so having such a stylish and welcoming space to relax in for a little while before heading out was more than appealing! I cracked open a bottle of uh, water, and immediately began to appreciate this festive tradition of visiting the City of Bath.

Before we had even reached the Christmas Markets located next to the breathtakingly beautiful Bath Abbey, the smell of pasties and sausage rolls flooded out of a West Cornwall Pasty shop and persuaded us to delay exploring until even later. I'm a firm believer in things happening just as they should and as I looked up over the busy Christmas Markets to see an illuminated Bath Abbey (thanks to not arriving there until the early hours of the evening), I firmly reminded myself never to doubt a sequence of events ever again.
Don't quote me on this, but if we're not counting those accidentally stumbled upon, I think these were my first Christmas markets of the year, making for an exciting visit! Personally, I'm not as much interested in what is for sale as what is on offer visually, as I move towards the high street shops to fill that gap (Anthropologie bracelet blog post coming soon). A display of lights enveloping crowds of cheerful people who can all be found wrapped in warm clothing, makes for me an experience to both remember and treasure.
I have a feeling I'm not going to be alone when I say that sometimes, you simply don't want an evening to end. You're having such a lovely time, that even returning to the comfort of your hotel room seems to be a shame. This was one of those times for me, but thankfully the Abbey Hotel's ArtBar exists. Before heading upstairs, warm hot chocolates were served in thermal double-layered glasses with an array of glistening Christmas decorations to admire as we warmed up. As far as prolonged evenings go, this was certainly in my top five!
By the time you read this, I will probably be on my way to Germany's Cologne (Koln) in anticipation of visiting the incredible Christmas Markets there for a few days, as another annual Christmas tradition. In the meantime, I hope you're all enjoying this festive season and if you're looking to immerse yourself in the Christmas spirit, be sure to connect with me over on Instagram!
