Germany at Christmas: Part Three

We may have been presented with a clean slate in the form of a fresh new year, however I still have one more day to cover from my recent visit to Germany's Cologne at Christmas time!  Consider this my final nod to the festive season and all of the adventures and experiences it brings about..

After an unusually organised early morning of packing and preparing to check-out, I took a few moments to appreciate the modern beauty of the hotel's foyer/reception area - the large Christmas tree towering over guests decorated with an array of golden baubles certainly didn't make leaving any easier!  We had arranged a later return home on this year's visit to Cologne, so to avoid the culture shock of an immediate journey home after exiting the hotel.  Once all suitcases had been offloaded, we wandered past the Cologne Cathedral one final time (and some of it's daily 20,000 visitors) in the direction of our final Christmas market, 'Heimat der Heinzel'.

If there was an award for the most colourful and entertaining Christmas market, Heimat der Heinzel would be taking it home.  The main feature of this market is undoubtedly the newly improved ice skating circuit, something that can be viewed from various standing points, including a ski lodge-style bar and an overlooking bridge that provided the perfect view of skaters passing through below.  Considering I've been ice skating three times in my life and each time have ended up injured (one attempt involving a night spent in a French hospital), I was very much the spectator.. however judging by the endless streams of happy faces and excitable laughs, this wintery feature was a definite hit!

Something I noticed on my 2014 visit to the Christmas markets in Cologne, was how every feature seemed to have been sprinkled with fairy dust and generally polished.  There is no denying that the markets have always been magical and captivating, however there is far much more to photograph now and with the constant guarantee of panoramic perfection.  Giant potato, anyone?

I'm a firm believer that these Christmas markets are only going to continuously improve, upgrade and attract more and more visitors, which in turn makes them even more appealing to me - even after six years of visiting!  This serves as an excellent example of why traditions don't need to be avoided in fear of experiencing your own version of Groundhog Day, at least not in Cologne, where the same Christmas markets are featured each year to cater to it's understandably large audience, but never without new features, adjustments and improvements!

Thank you so much for coming along with me on my experience of Cologne's Christmas markets, the feedback has once again been overwhelmingly wonderful and has seen the year through to a lovely end.  I hope you've all had a fantastic start to the new year and that it continues to improve with each and every day!

With love,

Gabrielle x

I am actually the same way, I have only ice skated once in my entire life and I didn't enjoyed it much when I did it. I love seeing the people skating but not me:-) May this year be one filled with wonderful things and everything you want. I am so I glad and very thankful that I met you. Blessings to you and your family. XOXO, Jeannette
