Tips For Growing Longer and Healthier Hair

Very long blonde hair
As a child, I never bought a doll unless it had long hair and I mean ridiculously long hair.  If the hair didn't present the chance of tripping up the doll or wrapping around her neck ten million times, I wasn't interested.  With this in mind, I probably shouldn't be surprised that years later I now have long hair.  Having said that, the idea of being able to trip over my hair is a daunting one because I'm pretty accident-prone as it is and I can't say I like the idea of being able to sit on my hair either.  Nope, I've found my 'ideal length' which sits happily somewhere between my belly button and hips.  However, based on the emails I receive, I know that many others are still working towards their 'ideal length'.   So, cue an up-to-date hair care post for those trying to lengthen their locks..

Very long blonde hair
Some of these tips you may already know, some you may not and some you may know but haven't yet put into practice - in which case, consider this a friendly push in the right direction!

*

Have regular trims  -  Over the years I spent growing my hair, I had my hair trimmed every 8-10 weeks. It's a different story now, however it's essential for healthy hair to prevent split ends from working their way up the strands

Cover your hair when showering  -  Keep hair washes to designated times as opposed to daily rinses (which are usually followed by rubbing your hair thoroughly with a towel in a bid to dry it as quickly as possible!)

Shampoo and conditioner  -  Don't skimp here, find a brand that works perfectly for your hair - though be careful not to be swayed by scent alone!  Apply conditioner generously.  I use Argan + argan oil colour shampoo and conditioner as I'm growing out some old highlights, however they also do a 'repair' version of the shampoo and conditioner for all hair types

Stay hydrated and eat well  -  Just like your body, your hair requires certain vitamins/nutrients to remain healthy in order to grow

Combing  -  Brush your hair starting from the bottom up and don't be tempted to brush/tear out knots in the process, untangle them by gently rubbing your fingers against each other with the knot in between.  After washing my hair, I always, always use my Tangle Teezer - I swear by it!

Sleep on a silk pillow slip  -  A tip that's usually laughed at a little before seriously considering, though it's not an idea to be pushed aside.  The softer surface causes less friction than cotton pillow slips.  Although they can be quite pricey, I started using them years ago and have never looked back

Protect it  -  Going back a while, I wondered why one side of my hair was so much shorter than the other and I soon found out it was due to my handbag strap breaking strands off as I slid it down my shoulder, so keep a lookout for what items come into regular contact with your hair

Wave goodbye to hot styling tools (sometimes) -  Do your best to ditch the heating tongs, diffusers, curlers etc from your regular routine and save them for special occasions.  Interestingly, I've always briefly blow dried my hair even though it's dead straight.  After washing my locks (every 3-4 days), I allow it to dry naturally before finishing off with a five minute blow dry, making sure to keep the hairdryer a good distance away.  Having said that, I'm sure everyone has very different opinions with this tip in mind!

Products  -  There are millions to choose from, however I use label.m Protein Spray and L'Oréal Elvive Extraorindary Oil.  I've been using the protein spray for as long as I can remember and I'm convinced it's played a large part in the longterm health of my hair

Vitamins  -   There are plenty of vitamins/supplements out there linked to hair growth and if you're curious and want to learn more, I'd suggest speaking to someone over the counter before purchasing to find out what would work best for you!  I take a collection of seven vitamins a day for general health, though the two I've been taking religiously for the past six or so years are Vitamin D and Multibionta Vitality

Needless to say, I have nothing against gorgeously short hair, though if you're looking to grow your hair I sincerely hope my tips will be of some use.  I look forward to hearing your thoughts below and especially if you have any tips of your own to add!

  27. These are such helpful tips on growing your hair out. I am like you with super long hair, and sometimes, it gets so heavy, that all I want to do is just chop it all off, and usually I do once a year, and massively regret it the next day. So maybe I learn and just do a trim as you suggested :)

I appreciate it a lot cos I'm still wanting to grow my butt length hair lol like rapunzel hihi ^^

I used castor oil to grow my hair thicker and grow faster, though it's a bit messy, it works effectively on me, but I'm still not content cos I want to make it even longer hihi.. Proobably will use some of your tips too.

I also heard that biotin is one of the vitamins we can take to promote hair growth and lovely nails but I haven't tried it yet. Eating foods rich in protein also have a big contribution for a long and healthier hair. So I'm trying to consume more of foods that have it..

Anyway, thanks for the tips, hun!

I think I've finally found a shampoo and conditioner that's helping it. I'm going to start back with vitamins. Awesome tips! I have a satin pillowcase.

  75. I can't believe the difficulties some people have in caring for their hair or growing it out. It always amazes me when I hear that or when someone compliments me on my own. I've never really taken care of my own locks, they kind of just do their own thing hahaha. That said it's very straight and not prone to curling so it's not entirely perfect. I like your tips, I agree with not washing it every day. Too drying and apparently that oil is supposed to be good for it.

Sleeping with a silk pillow sounds so luxurious and it's something I've been wanting to try for a while actually. It's also supped to be great in taming frizz!

  82. You have the most beautiful hair in this world Gabrielle, thanks so much for sharing your secrets with us! My parents used to cut my hair really short as a kid and I got so upset because I wanted long and dreamy hair! They let me do so in fourth grade and it was a long and hard way to get it to today’s length. Trimming regularly is a good way to keep it healthy plus it works wonders if you give your hair now and again a break from daily washing. I also found out that my hair only grows nicely to a certain length, beyond that and it is thin and has cracked ends.

  93. These are some great tips! My hair is a few of inches shorter than yours (it sits at my waist) and I'm with you on a lot of them. I only wash my hair every 3-4 days, exclusively use my Tangle Teezer and always brush from the bottom up and only after a shower, I also use a detangler and a few nice drugstore products and virtually never heat style it and I think that's about it! None of it is a huge amount of effort but I really think it helps keep my hair healthy enough to stay at this length so the ends don't get all thinned out and force me to cut them off!

  94. I agree that the idea of sleeping on silk is very laughed at and oftentimes ignored because it's quite comfy sleeping on cotton. Though I didn't know that silk can help the hair grow longer, thank you for sharing such a worthy information. You look very pretty and I love your blonde hair! :)
