Mercure Queens Hotel, Cheltenham

As some of you may know, I celebrated my birthday a week ago today.  For the occasion, I unplugged and was kindly whisked away to Cheltenham by a family member.  Although ordinarily I favour big celebrations, on this occasion I much preferred the idea of a slow-paced, quiet and indulgent break where absolutely nothing was required of me.  Keeping in mind these preferences, the Mercure Cheltenham Queens Hotel was an absolute treat.  I spent my entire birthday kicking back, eating a horrendous amount and doing, well.. nothing!

Before even taking off my heels, I immediately rang down and ordered up afternoon tea for two.  Although there was a beautifully decorated downstairs area to enjoy as many sweet treats as the heart desired, there was something more attractive that day about putting my feet up and firing through macaron after macaron without any interruptions.  The selection of savouries and sweets was fantastic and arrived within just fifteen minutes - best of all, my favourite combination was included, scones with lemon curd!

Shifting the focus to the hotel's interior design for a moment (seriously though, just a moment - we have food to discuss), the devil truly was in the detail.  It took the unpacking of a wash bag, one inspection of the complementary toiletries and a shower for me to realise the wall's tiling comprised miniature illustrations of the hotel itself.  How cute! Regardless of whether it's to your taste, there's no denying it's an entirely unique idea and something I've never come across before!

The hotel room itself was up on the third floor as requested and as a result, was bright, fresh and overlooking the famous Imperial Gardens across the road.  As often is the case with a late-August birthday, it was pouring with rain for the entire time, however when you're sat watching it wash clean the road below from a cosy window seat, it becomes so much more attractive.

MGalley Mercure Cheltenham Queen HotelsAfter a second knock came at the door to deliver complementary birthday macarons along with a thoughtful birthday card, I put on a drop dead gorgeous embellished piece sent my way by Bae Boutique and took some snaps in preparation for a blog post on the dress (coming later this week!).  Now, I'd love to say I did something other than eat as my birthday came to an end.. but I'm not a liar.  My birthday plan was to do as little as possible and eat as much as I could - as you can tell from this post, that's exactly what I did.  Thanks to the Mercure's late-night room service, we ordered up cold drinks and club sandwiches with sides of chips at around 11pm and ate them in our pyjamas.  Heaven!
MGalley Mercure Cheltenham Queen HotelsThe next day, I was admittedly quite tired as thanks to an interconnecting door, I was able to hear next door's.. antics, for quite some time.  Thankfully, an indulgent spread of breakfast arrived on time to save the day!  Have I mentioned before how much I love scrambled egg?  One of these days I might just boycott all other food and keep to scrambled egg, because that's how much I love it.  If you happen to be staying at a Mercure hotel in the near future, be sure to enjoy their button mushrooms as well, they are in-cred-ible.
MGalley Mercure Cheltenham Queen Hotels

MGalley Mercure Cheltenham Queen HotelsAfter packing and tidying up the masses of wrapping paper, we ventured down through the impressive stairway (lifts available) and checked out.  I don't think I've ever spent so much time doing absolutely nothing and I couldn't have been happier.  Sometimes, dropping off the radar for twenty-four hours can do a world of good.  Heaps of food can also do a world of good.  Combine the two and you've got yourself a very happy birthday girl!  Anyway, before I have you all convinced I'm an unhealthily-overweight recluse, I'd better go..  keep your eyes peeled for my next post wearing a birthday dress gifted by Bae Boutique!

  64. Oh my Gabrielle,

What a way to celebrate your birthday! happy happier BELATED birthday! It looks like it was a fabulous time and you were spoilt by the gracious team of Mercure *_^

I stayed in a Mercure Hotel here in Malaysia before this, many years back, they were kind enough to sponsor us the crew and hosts rooms, for a TV program that we were producing and it was quite a pleasant stay, though the decor is quite different from this one here, but nonetheless, comfortable and modern.

Let's have a greater and better birthday celebration next year! I can't wait to read about it then *_^

  71. Ohhh...I celebrated my birthday in the same week as you...I had a fantastic time in London, at the Royal Horseguards Hôtel. We had an Afternoon Tea...Yours sounds perfect, the food and all looked delicious. ;-)
