Rome With UNA Hotels: Part One

UNA Hotel Roma
It had been a year or so since I last visited Italy and even longer since I'd stepped foot in the beautiful city of Rome, so when the opportunity arose to work with UNA Hotels.. well, I was more than a little excited.  Camera at the ready and a suitcase of clothing curated to withstand Rome's sizzling hot summer temperatures, I jetted off to stay a couple of nights at the ultra modern, four-star UNA Hotel Roma!

UNA Hotel Roma

UNA Hotel Roma
UNA Hotel Roma
UNA Hotel Roma After a forty minute taxi journey from the airport to the central-located hotel, the warm and welcoming reception staff made our arrival that little bit sweeter.  Good news was delivered in the form of a room upgrade, followed by a thorough explanation of the city's map - within five minutes, distances were pinpointed and calculated for us to determine how many of the items on our hit list could be seen in the time we had.  I could have been health-conscious and taken the stairs, though after an hour and a half spent waiting/locating my luggage at Rome's Fiumicino airport.. I was all for an easy life and walked wearily in the direction of the lift!

Before even unpacking, I took the opportunity to freshen up in the hotel room's bathroom (anyone else obsess over complimentary toiletries provided by hotels?) before speedily changing out of my jeans and into a maxi dress.  Arriving in the late afternoon allowed us the opportunity to head out and explore straight away, so I did my absolute best not to wrap myself in one of the super-cosy dressing gowns provided and crash out on the spacious bathroom floor..

The weather well and truly took me by surprise, confirming my thought prior to leaving about shirts being out of the question!  The temperature never dipped below 35°C when winding through the historic streets, which made the city feel a world away from England's fruitless (and admittedly a little tragic) attempts at 'heatwaves'.  As our evening's exploration took us near the Colosseum, we were surrounded by groups of people holding up maps and taking photos of everything and anyone - I've most likely said it before, but I really love tourism.  I love trying to identify the foreign languages, seeing the variations of car number plates, watching families attempt to map-read and yes, even the selfie sticks.  I refuse to ever use one, but seeing other tourists using them really puts a smile on my face.  Is that weird? Probably.

Realising the Colosseum could be seen at sunset if we were to wait a little longer, we set about locating somewhere to enjoy our first meal in Rome.  A quick walk around the side of the Colosseum saw us stumble across what looked like a very large vegetable, though upon closer inspection, proved to be an utterly idyllic restaurant with a menu packed full of pizza and pasta.  There was no hesitation on my part after I spotted Pizza ai Funghi on the restaurant's menu - my favourite!  Angelino ai Fori is quite possibly now my favourite restaurant in Rome; there was a beautiful breeze throughout the outdoor seating area that allowed me to finally cool down, the staff were lively and the food was beyond delicious.

Angelino ai Fori: Largo Corrago Ricci, 40-43a, 00184 Roma, Italy

Dinner was followed by a warm, mid-evening brief walk back towards the Colosseum through busy streets.  Although I've seen the Colosseum both from outside and within on a few occasions in the past, I'd never seen it before at sunset.  It's sheer size, architecture and famous reputation left me standing still and staring at it for what seemed like an eternity.  Some things really are too beautiful to put into words..

The wonderful thing about places that attract tourism, is that they never sleep.  By nine, ten or even eleven at night, the weather is still beautiful and there are still masses of people wandering around, keen to make the most of their visit.  Eventually, tiredness set in and we began following the map to find our way back to the modern comfort of UNA Hotel Roma.  A cheery greeting from each member of staff at reception and a refreshing blast of air conditioning greeted us back to the hotel, once again making us feel very much welcome.

UNA Hotel Roma
UNA Hotel Roma All that remained to do from this point onwards, was to somehow muster up the energy to return to our beautiful hotel room and unpack.  After a serious amount of procrastinating, I worked my way through a pack of Haribo purchased from the convenience store across the road as I unpacked my suitcase.  Fast forward half an hour and all that was left to do was to fall blissfully asleep with thoughts of gelato and sunshine, along with an excitement for what the next day may bring!

  37. Rome stole my heart and ever since I visited it a few years ago, I've been dreaming of a big come back! You look absolutely divine in that black maxi...with that long hair and natural beauty, you could easily be mistaken for an ancient Roman priestess (in Latin they are called Vestalis, I think it is Vestal/ Vestals in English). Perhaps seeing you next to the colosseum made me think of that.

The photographs of the hotel are superb and the description of your arrival is wonderful...you really payed attention to detail. Great job! I always love travel posts.

I don't think it is weird to like tourists...it's fun seeing families and friends travelling and having a good time...tourists are usually always in a good mood! I like them too (and better because I'm surrounded my them all the time during the Summer).

I always remember which brand/fragrance a hotel carries and I definitely don't return to the ones that don't have proper little bottles for their toiletries and use little plastic sachets instead, ew. My friend Emma was invited by Una Hotels in Tuscany and her pictures were stunning. I couldn't wait to see your post when I found out you've been invited, too. I'm not disappointed, it's another wonderful post with stunning pictures and I really consider Una Hotels if I find some time to make a holiday.

I know what you mean with the 'touristy' things. They are so cheesy but they always make the best memories and to me 'touristy' is part of the big holiday atmosphere. Would love to go to Rome one day and explore their ancient history and mythology.

  67. aaaaahhhhh Gabrielle,

It's so nice of UNA hotel to invite you for a stay. It sure looks comfortable and yes! I am a huge fan of hotel toiletries, especially those really good ones! haha

Like you, I refuse to use a selfie stick. Besides, I am still not good at selfies anyways, not so fond of it myself. I love that the weather looks great for a walk around town and I am so in love with the restaurant! That whole outdoor seating under the vine is absolutely romantic, to me, I feel. I can totally see myself there NOW!!

I have yet to visit Rome and perhaps one day, I shall *_^ Looking forward to part 2!

    Have a great week ahead.

    Cheers,
    Jeann

  71. The hotel looks very lovely and I like the contemporary design. I loved the photos on your Instagram, so I was interested in reading the whole post. The hotel seems fantastic. You're too funny, I am the same about the Hotel toiletries, although since I have to travel a lot for business, we usually just save them for our guests that visit our home. Easy cleanup and makes for a nice welcome gift bag, when they arrive.

  78. Aaaw Rome.. I can’t wait to go there again (within a week!! :) I admit, one of the first things I check at checking in a Hotel are the complementary toiletries ;P and omg, I absolutely share your love for ‘tursim’ whenever I’m at the airport I like to wander around and guess peoples nationalities, and whenever I’m in a foreign country I like to observe the peoples behavior and such ;) I’ve saved the restaurant address btw, will let you know If I go there! ;)
    Ps: the dresses are gorgeous!!

  81. Hello Gaby! I had to go back an look through all your Rome and hotel UNA posts. I was there right after you left and yes, the high temperatures got my by surprise but that didn't stop me from having an amazing time. I visited the Colosseum as well as the Vatican City and was delighted by all of their beauty and history. I actually walked by that restaurant in your pictures that had all the greenery hanging! I stayed at Exedra Hotel by the big round about with the big fountain in the middle. The hotel UNA looks amazing and I will definitively check it out for my next visit to Rome (Yes! I am going back!) You looked beautiful in all the pictures and I loved the maxi dress. Thanks for sharing my friend! XOXO, Jeannette
