Rome with UNA Hotels: Part Two

Una Hotel Roma Breakfast
Picking up where we left off in Part One of my travel diary with UNA Hotels.. that beautifully deep sleep was followed by a delicious hotel breakfast.  Although there was of course the option of going down to enjoy a generous buffet breakfast amongst other guests, we opted instead to have it delivered to our room so as to be able to sleep a little longer (too honest?).  It was at this time I discovered our room had a doorbell, which is always a nice variation from finding yourself lingering close to the door in order to hear any possible knocking sounds!

(If you're curious, a flight from London to Rome takes approximately 2 hours and 30 mins)

Una Hotel Roma Breakfast

After eating far too much chocolate madeira cake and pastries smothered in raspberry jam, I changed into another maxi dress and thanked my England-bound self for being realistic about the weather.  It was hot and I mean swelteringly hot! Though, considering I live in the cold country of clouds, I'm hardly in a position to complain about soaring temperatures - I instead marvelled at just how high the temperature could reach!  Before even leaving the hotel, we booked onto a Hop-on Hop-off bus tour after doing so in Barcelona last Autumn.  Tickets were able to be purchased from reception at a very reasonable price and even better, we were shown specifically where each stop was and how often tour buses were available (every 10 minutes and every 30 minutes after 7.30pm).

We opted to skip the first stop that was just a minute away from our hotel and instead walked about ten minutes to reach the second stop on the map.  Directly outside this stop was the famous Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, a Roman church particularly worth visiting if you're at all interested in architecture.  The sheer size of it from within is astonishing and the intricate detail at every turn really is very beautiful.  A word of warning, as with many religious places, females are required to have their shoulders, chest and legs covered.  I opted to wear a lilac pashmina I carried around with me purely for this kind of situation, though long lengths of white cloth were available at the entrance for those who arrived without.

Joining the Hop-on Hop-off bus tour, we made our way through various stops (including Capitoline Hill, shown below) and explored what each had to offer.  As the day went on, each place seemed to become increasingly busy, with 4pm being the 'peak time' for crowds.  It was around about the time when our sunglasses began sliding down our noses thanks to the heat, that we decided it was time to track down some refreshments.  Down a side alley, we located a nearly-empty café and though we knew nothing about the place, we saw diet cokes being served to a table and that was about as much persuasion needed.  The food was delicious and there was a very welcome breeze at our table - though I don't think I've ever come across such a moody waiter in my life!

Necklace - Estella Bartlett 'Songbird'

The frequency of incoming buses meant we had the opportunity to explore Piazza del Campidoglio - one of Rome's 'most beautiful squares' - whilst we were at the Capitoline Hill.  It was tourist heaven there with nearly everyone holding a camera.  There was a small protest going on at the time nearby that attracted crowds, as well as policemen and eventually the army.  Although it was a relatively small concern, we concluded it's better to be safe than sorry, took some snaps and left the group to their shouting and whistle-blowing.  Having said that, it's very unlikely you'd experience anything similar and so be sure to add that to your landmark hit list if you're visiting Rome anytime soon!

As you may be able to tell from the above photo, the weather took a dramatic turn in the early hours of the evening. The temperature reached such a height that the sky, well.. broke!  In the space of what couldn't have been more than twenty seconds, torrential rain began hurtling down and drenching everyone.  I have to admit, I loved it!  So long as everyone is safe, there's nothing more exciting than extreme weather.  Humidity combined with heavy rain?  Yes please! All the same, our clothes were now covered in dirt and water and so we ventured back to UNA Hotel Roma to freshen up before dinner.

A quick change later and we headed back out to make the most of our final night in the historic city of Rome.  A nice surprise for me came in the form of tousled hair thanks to the rain - something difficult for me to achieve no matter how many products I have at hand!  The city by night really is spectacular, something that can only be compared to Paris.  Rome by night isn't better or worse than Rome by day, it's simply different and because of that, it feels as though you're exploring an entirely new city.  Bright stone and turquoise-coloured fountains transform into warm glowing buildings and a busy (but calm) nightlife.

T-shirt - H&M

Trousers - Ralph Lauren

Shoes - Dune Finchy Sandals

I've inadvertently made a habit out of visiting Hard Rock Cafés around Europe and so it seemed appropriate to add Rome's to my list!  You're guaranteed tasty food, a cocktail of various languages surrounding you and of course, good music.  Interestingly enough, Nirvana was followed by Taylor Swift at this branch, as well as some ACDC leading on to Nicky Minaj.  I heard some grizzling about the music choices, though by that point I had burger-brain and the music was the last thing on my mind.  The ambience was fantastic at the Hard Rock Café and not even the 1hr 45min wait put me off the occasion.  In fact,  it helped make the experience all the more exciting as it meant a midnight walk through Rome.  Oh and yes, I can confirm that is just as dreamy as it sounds!

Before heading back to the hotel, after admiring some of Rome's beautiful illuminated fountains, we stopped by a local convenience store again to pick up some more sweets, before finally returning to the comfort of our hotel.  It was only on this final night that it dawned on me how high the ceiling was of our hotel room; the floor-sweeping curtains really were something.  Although I was sad to think I'd be leaving both the hotel and city the next day, I forced myself to go straight to bed to ensure we would have time to head out the next day before catching our afternoon flight back home to the UK!
The third and final part will be up at the end of this week, but until then, be sure to check out the breathtakingly beautiful #UNApassion videos over on the UNA Hotels Youtube channel!

With love,

Gabrielle x

Note: I was provided with a complimentary stay at UNA Hotel Roma, however all opinions are my own.

  5. I love that maxi dress you're wearing! It seems perfect for hot weather without the risk of getting sunburned.

Hot rain (that doesn't sound right) is my favorite - at least when I can change into something dry. It doesn't rain a lot in California, much less tropical type rain, so I'm always really excited when I get to walk around outside in the rain. Also the way the air feels right after is so amazing!

  62. Hop on and Hop off tours can be so much fun! I love the places you visited. The structures are so stunning there. Historical! They're breathtaking to see through pictures, so I can imagine in person. The hotel's breakfast looks so delicious. Glad you enjoyed :)
