Christmas at Bath: Part Two

Bath Christmas Markets 2015Part One of my 'Christmas at Bath' travel diary ended with fudge and the theme continues here!  Though first, back to the early hours of the evening where my stay in Bath seemed to get better by the hour, with our departure from the magical Christmas markets leading on to a buzzing yet calm nightlife (the combination exists!) past Bath Abbey and towards the restaurants.  Quite strangely, I've always seen feelings about situations or even places in colours and although I'm finding it near impossible to explain the colours in which I saw the city that night, I can assure you they were beautiful.  Very, very beautiful.

I don't know about you, but I have a list in my head of restaurants and cafés that are guaranteed 'favourable spots'.  I adore trying out new places and admiring both their menus and decor in the process, however when a trip is more about the culture and architecture than the food, having a list of go-to destinations can be a total blessing.  On this occasion, I spotted a Café Rouge restaurant near the top of a boutique-shopping street that, as always, had a warm glow about it that suggested comfort and good food.  Phew!  The place quickly filled up as we continued to enjoy our meals and talk over the festive music playing in the background and if I wasn't aware of the mass of fudge we'd just purchased, I definitely would've suggested sticking around for dessert!

During the later hours of the evening, we wandered back through some of the shops that had remained open until late, admired the glimpses of Christmas trees peeking through gaps in curtains and eventually found ourselves back at the luxurious Abbey Hotel.  Although the hotel's exterior and Apres Ski Bar looked pretty special upon arrival, it looked positively glistening come the evening.  The abundance of lights looked like something out of a Christmas film!  After toying with the idea of venturing into the outdoor bar for drinks, we eventually settled on exploring the hotel's modern Art Bar for hot chocolates with amaretto.  Yum!

abbey hotel art bar 2015If I look shattered, it's because I was.  Big time.  I think I've been burning the candle at both ends lately, though thankfully the relaxing ambience, warm drinks and friendly bar staff went a long way in bringing me back to life! Speaking of ambience, the hotel's bar is truly very special; the warm colour combination, cosy lighting and eclectic mix of design features is a total treat for the eyes (not a treat on the eyebrows though apparently - no idea what happened there, I promise I have two) .  Needless to say there's no prize for guessing why it's called the 'Art Bar'...

Let it never be said I'm not a woman of my word - we end with fudge!  There's nothing quite like indulging in something sweet come midnight when staying away.  It's a (terrible) habit I've been keeping for many years but well, when fudge as good as this is available, why break the habit?!  Anyway, I hope you've enjoyed reading about my festive trip to Bath, it's one of my favourite annual traditions and one that I intend to continue for as long as possible!

With love,

Gabrielle x
