Layers and Lenses

England winter weather stylingIf I were to create a list of environments I am most often drawn to, private landscapes would rank near the top, along with historic houses and luxurious hotels.  City-styling is no doubt something we all spend a fair bit of time developing and playing around with, however when it comes to dressing for cold weather and muddy grounds while still looking stylish, I've been consistently puzzled.  For years I was naively stepping over puddles in suede boots and returning to my car with a frozen neck after boldly (ahem, stupidly) venturing out without a scarf.  It's only in recent years I've managed to get my act together with regard to dressing for outdoors - and considering my undying love for rough terrain and open fields, it's not a moment too soon!

Luckies of London: Valentine's Day Gift Guide

Luckies of London Valentine's Day GiftsAs February 14th nears, thoughts tend to shift to bunches of red roses and boxes of chocolate with regard to gift-giving. I should point out I'm all for flamboyantly wrapped chocolates, however thanks to Luckies of London, I've also had my eyes opened to some other fun options!  From reusable gift bows pre-made and ready to wrap around that bottle of aftershave in a matter of seconds, to wooden heart-shaped jigsaws you can pass to your partner over breakfast.  Ah, romantic...

Stilettos at Stourhead

Stourhead the pantheon stepsDepending on how long you've been reading my blog, you may remember my short travel account of visiting The National Trust's Stourhead last Spring.  I came away entirely convinced that no other time of year's visit to Stourhead could possibly compete with that of the warmer months.  However, when visiting this past week in close-to-freezing temperatures, I was proved wrong - very wrong!  A gorgeous pair of Carvela Kurt Geiger Kiara Heels found themselves on my feet thanks to House of Fraser and I knew exactly the location I wanted to introduce them to...

The Truest of Blues

Jessica Nails The Truest of BluesBrrr!  I looked out of my window this morning to see a sheet of white covering the ground outside.  Sure, it may not have been the snow I'd wished for, but it was the best alternative - frost!  With multiple scarves wrapped around my head and neck (yes, really), I headed out to capture the beautiful frosty manicure I'd applied the night before - a combination of two calming blue shades by Jessica Nails, The Truest of Blues c/o.

Windswept Walks

winter walks in england hampshireIt was only around a week ago I expressed my surprise to every unfortunate passer-by at not being frozen to the core considering the month was now January.  Though, clearly England heard me and so similar to how last year's summer appeared out of nowhere, winter has now well and truly arrived - and with little warning!  On this relaxing and plant-packed day, the sun was setting beautifully, the wind picked up and the temperature dropped to just 1ÂșC...

Uplifting Quotes for January and Beyond...

Uplifting Quotes List 2016The start of each New Year promises change for us all thanks to resolutions and/or lists of aims; some of which are kept as part of our routines and others that fade out.  With this in mind, it's usually around mid-way through January that lists packed with tips on 'dealing with failed resolutions' or similar start appearing both online and in print.  In a year comprising fifty-two weeks, it seems unfair to declare failure just two weeks in!  So, instead, I've pulled together some positive quotes that aim to encourage, as opposed to guilt-trip. After all, there's no limit to the amount of times you can pick yourself up and dust yourself off again, right?  Step outside of the January hysteria for a moment and you'll notice we're only a couple of weeks into the year - January is the baby of the bunch!  We've got this...

Goya: The Portraits, National Gallery

Goya The Portraits National Gallery
Up until recently, I hadn't been familiar with the work of Goya.  However, when a friend kindly gave me tickets to discover the exhibition Goya: The Portraits, it seemed a wonderful opportunity to become better acquainted with the Spanish romantic painter's portraiture work, as I gather he is mostly famed for his depiction of war.  The exhibition was on display at the National Gallery in London from 7th October to 10th January, so you can go ahead and slap me on the wrists for sharing my thoughts the day after the banners came down...

Long Tresses and Doll Dresses

Missguided Embroidered Smock DressI think we're all well aware by now that our wardrobes are never going to be 'complete'; there'll always be the need (ahem, want) for more embellished jumpers and pairs of jeans!  However all the same, I've noticed lately my wardrobe is severely lacking in dresses.  I'm talking about above-the-knee casual dresses that you can fling on and pair with dark tights and fierce heels, the type that looks playful and yet chic throughout the winter months.  It's a style I used to visit frequently until I discovered the addictive power of a well-fitting pair of jeans.  Though, I suppose you could say the (albeit brief) break has done some good, as with the start of this New Year I've noticed my love for 'doll dresses' returning and with much, much enthusiasm!

Hotel Wishlist: The Beaumont, London

All photos have been taken from The Beaumont hotel website
The thirteenth addition to my Hotel Wishlist series is arriving a little later than planned thanks to Christmas (though it's forgiven entirely, of course) and brings with it marble bathrooms, a prime location and 73 bedrooms/suites.  An historic 1926 building set in the heart of Mayfair (London) is home to The Beaumont, a luxury hotel that claims to 'recapture the spirit of old-world luxury'...

Ciate Cookies and Cream

ciate cookies and cream review
Hello there, 2016!  I've been a loyal fan of nude nail shades for as long as I can remember now, so after months of attempting to break the mould by experimenting with various other colours, it seemed the perfect choice to welcome in the New Year.  Ah, the warm embrace of familiarity!  I've returned to nude nails once more in the form of Ciate's Cookies and Cream, a flattering light taupe shade that sits somewhere on the scale between beige and grey.  I'd forgotten how much love I had stored up for nude nails; this milky nude provides a polished canvas for any jewellery combination and most of all, creates the beautiful illusion of both elongated fingers and a calm disposition...
