Windswept Walks

winter walks in england hampshireIt was only around a week ago I expressed my surprise to every unfortunate passer-by at not being frozen to the core considering the month was now January.  Though, clearly England heard me and so similar to how last year's summer appeared out of nowhere, winter has now well and truly arrived - and with little warning!  On this relaxing and plant-packed day, the sun was setting beautifully, the wind picked up and the temperature dropped to just 1ºC...

blog nature photography
sunset plant photography winterWith no gloves or thermals on, I realised just how underprepared I was to be walking outdoors.  There's a few wardrobe essentials I've been continuously reaching for over recent months including this feather down jacket by Ralph Lauren and thermal, anti-fatigue heeled boots.  However, clothes of these types are both going to be entirely inappropriate come my trip to the Lake District in September of this year.  Funnily enough, my childhood was packed full with hiking holidays and such, but as time has gone on I've found myself gravitating towards city breaks.  I can't express how excited I am at the thought of being surrounded by hills and waterproof jackets once more, though one thing is for certain - my wardrobe isn't at all prepared. Time for some advance planning!

long blonde hair walkingAlthough I'll be doing a fair bit of travelling before visiting the Lake District, I'm genuinely excited for the opportunity to plan for a more unusual break.  There's no reaching for my usual 'city break style' and instead, planning for September weather enjoyed by fields of sheep and sloped hills.  Oh and uh, the one or five lakeside afternoon teas followed by shopping sprees, of course!

H&M Dark Blue Cargo Pants - Also available in a gorgeous khaki green version; perfect for throwing on, tucking into boots and facing whatever hill/mountain is next on the agenda

Tom Ford Sunglasses* (Saskia) - One thing I do remember from my childhood hikes, is that the higher you go, the brighter the glare.  So, instead of damaging my retinas, I'll most likely be living day-to-day in stylish sunnies

Abacus Hisingen Quilted Vest - Windproof?  Check.  Water repellant?  Check.  Pockets to slide those always-needed blister plasters into?  Check.

Allude Women's Designer Knitwear* - With a soft cashmere and oversized design, this jumper has shot right to the top of my wishlist!

Eva Solo Drinking Bottle - Proving essentials needn't compromise style

Timberland Premium Waterproof Boots* - This edgy, black Timberland design combines both style and comfort; the ultimate combination for outdoor walks

Mulberry Lily in Black Glossy Goat - I keep changing my mind with regard to my next bag splurge, however this option keeps popping back into mind!

  11. As freezing it probably is over there, seeing posts like this really makes me long for the cooler weather. It's almost 40 degrees in Melbourne today and while I sit here melting, I'm dreaming of coat weather and sitting by the fire with a hot chocolate. I think the opposing seasons between England and Australia always messes with my brain, when it was summer for you guys over there I remember wishing for the heat!

  13. I've never been on hiking breaks, really. My parents often opted to take my siblings and I on city retreats, but I've often wondered what it's like to go on a rural excursion. These photos are absolutely gorgeous, Gabrielle.

  23. Lake District...I bet you will enjoy your trip. Just remember to do some planning ahead...as you said, you will need some hiking gear. Transiting from urban to outdoor (suitable for nature) clothes can be a challenge but I'm sure you can do it.

You look lovely! Your long hair always look so perfect. That jacket looks very warm and cozy..charming photos! You don't look cold, even if as you said, the temperatures dropped suddenly.

England heard you, did it? Croatia must have heard you too....it's been freezing here lately, with lots of windy days and temperature dropping bellow zero. I even went to visit a friend in Livno (Bosnia region) and I looked forward to spending some time in a snowy region but unfortunately it started snowing just as I was catching the bus to Mostar so no snow for me...just cold...but to be honest, cold , windy and sunny is something I can live with...it is cold, windy and rainy that I can't stand but fortunately that kind of weird weather rarely happens!

Yesterday, however, it snowed and I needed to bundle up and it's pretty cold today, so I agree, winter is pretty much here now, lol! I love the set you created here as well; that vest is so lovely, in addition to the sweater and purse! Thanks so much for sharing, beautiful; keep warm and have an amazing week!

It was snowing all night into morning and the winds were whipping it all around. I realized that I was totally underdressed. As soon as I got home I broke out the winter coat and have made a mental note to grab my gloves on the way out!!
