Storytime with TravelSupermarket

british travel blogger 2016I've seen many cities in various countries over the years and with great relief can say that rarely have I ever returned home regretting many experiences.  Whether it involves shopping my way through Barcelona, hiking up a Swiss mountain or enjoying Bratwurst in a medieval German town - it's been one positive experience after another!  With this in mind, when TravelSupermarket got in touch to introduce their blog post 'Make holidays memorable for the right reasons', I was sitting ready with a pen and paper.  See, my love for European countries has been in place for quite some time and was just as intense a few years ago as it is now.  And it was back then I could be found sitting in a café with a friend of mine, nodding enthusiastically at the idea of visiting Paris together.  A nod that would eventually turn into an aerial-view grin from the airplane and from there, a bit of regret just a few hours later...

After having spent a few weekends in the city before then with my parents, I hadn't accounted for the unfortunate possibility of my friend receiving a break-up text just as we were checking-in!  I felt terrible for her.  The next 48 hours were spent drifting in and out of the hotel, the length of each rainy outing depending entirely on how successful my distraction tactics were from her break-up.  Definitely not how either of us had pictured the trip!

Just in case I'm unfortunate enough to come across a similar problem miles away from home, I'm taking a leaf out of TravelSupermarket's book and brainstorming ways to avoid any future holidays spats.  Over time I've learnt that while travelling, the little things really do matter and once you've taken care of them, you leave yourself with much more room to deal with the 'bigger' things - like heartbroken friends!  There are so many useful apps and guides accessible via technology now, though even they couldn't have prevented a situation like the one I've described.  However, disappointing news and holiday spats don't always have to result in travel nightmares, just as TravelSupermarket have shown over on their blog - the trip can be salvaged!  Here are my top three tips for damage limitation:

*

Research travel blogs beforehand - create a list of recommended 'genuine gems' that are mood and/or weather dependant

*

Download apps before leaving - the more, the merrier!  Translation apps, WeatherPro for timing your schedule around downpours, TravelSafe for a database of emergency service numbers...

*

Discuss goals before booking - agree expectations with your travelling partner and compare wish lists.  How much of your time do you want to be spent exploring/eating/sleeping/crying in your hotel room?

*

That one unfortunate trip aside, I've got a head packed full with very happy travel memories.  It seems with every season that goes by, I become more and more eager to spend as much time as possible abroad!  It's because of this I've bookmarked TravelSupermarket's blog post and will be continuing to mentally add my own points.  Roll on the next trip!

So, before I go off in search of further Parisian photos to swoon over, I'd love to know - have you experienced any awkward/disappointing travel situations before and how did you cope with them?

With love,

Gabrielle x

  1. I've only ever travelled with various family members but never actually friends (well, not overseas at least) but I can imagine that there would probably be some inevitable arguments along the way!

  4. That sounds like such a horrible experience! It must have been hard for you to comfort her, though I do think that you need to make the most of where you are in the present. You can’t let things like that ruin amazing experiences. Great tips though! Hope you never get into another travel experience like that again! x

  6. Based on the title of this post, I'm guessing that Storytime is a series of posts you've done before, but I'm pretty gutted that this is the first time I've only come across it, because I absolutely love it, Gabrielle!

I can only imagine what it must've been like to comfort a heartbroken friend while in Paris! Being someone who is terrible with comforting people in general, I think I may have commented on pigeons too...ha!

  7. Beautiful photos! I find it's so important to be on the same page as the person you'll be traveling with, which is why there are some people I just love but wouldn't travel with, haha :)

  8. That must have been so difficult trying to console your friend and enjoy your trip at the same time. I've never had any bad experiences like that, though I don't travel often. The TravelSupermarket's site sounds like it has some wonderful tips. I'll have to check it out. Beautiful photos and great story!

  9. Wow, this must have been an adventure. I've actually recently pulled out of travel plans with a friend. Things are a bit rocky between us, and I'd rather not be states away form home while we're off together and fighting. Oh life. This is a great post though, thanks for sharing!

  17. I love these beautiful photos! Ugh it sucks when things out of your control happen and put a damper on a trip. I've been unwell a lot while travelling (chronic illness) and it sucked a bit of the fun right out of what would otherwise be an amazing experience, haha. But that's life! It's a shame that trip didn't go so smoothly for you, but at least you have new memories to treasure in the same beautiful city ;)

  21. Gabrielle, you are such a gifted writer. You have a way with your words that really set the tone and setting for what you're sharing. I've never traveled to Europe before, but I definitely intend on doing so someday, visiting the countries my family are from :) Thanks so much for sharing, girlie, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  22. That was a mighty untimely breakup! That trip certainly could've gone better but it sounds like you did your best to make the most of your time there while also consoling your friend. I've been pretty lucky that type of situation hasn't occurred while traveling with friends. My friend's boyfriend unexpectedly showed up to surprise her when we visited Montreal but it turned out for the best since he arrived with a car and had great ideas.

  23. These are great tips for traveling; thankfully I haven't encountered any major events in the countries I travel to, but it's definitely something worth keeping in mind! Loving your photos!

  24. I've travel quite a lot overseas on my own with usually meeting friends on the other end so they help me out if I ever have a problem. I do make sure i do my research ahead of time as well for backup and just knowing what I'm getting into would be smart as well hahah. Great post!

  25. First of all, a person who breaks up by text message is a bloody coward and a fool, at least have the decency to do it face to face or wait for the person to return from the trip, what an asshat! And secondly nope, never experience awkward trips before and I really hope I will never experience it.

  29. What a horrid experience for your friend. I've not had bad trip experiences. Although, the most less than delightful experiences were just lost luggage tragedies, (which is why I carry on, always), and a booking miscommunication on the hotel's part upon an arrival. But, it all got sorted afterward. Great tips, Gabrielle. Happy weekend. xx/Madison

  44. I really love Paris, I usually go that place a few times a year, this place is so magical. I agree if its your first time traveling or not, it is really useful to do a little research, take some advices from blogs and just try to know and program what will you do on it. For my part, after all this time I just go without any plans and get lost through the city ahah.
As you well said, the little things really do matter, its sad the story of your friend's breakup and I hope next time you will have more fun in the city. Great work,

  49. OMG, what are the odds of that? It must have been such an ordeal for both of you...I mean there isn't anything you could have done, because really can one comfort a broken heart? Honestly, only time can do that. Well, at least you were there for your friend and it must have been bad for her as well, arriving in the most romantic city on planet and finding out that her 5 months relationship ended. I can see how it must have made your visit to Paris a lot less enjoyable...but some day you'll probably be able to laugh about it.

your tips are excellent...Doing some reasearch is always good and downloading travel apps sounds great!
