Actually, You Can!

Knitted Button Up Black Midi Dress
We each have these ideas of what we can and can't do, and nine times out of ten they're based on pretty flimsy reasons.  But that's a whole other topic.  Right now?  Let's just keep it to our wardrobes. You see, I'm pretty sure everyone has something they think they can't wear; because it doesn't work, it doesn't flatter, it's just not 'suited' to them.  But what does that even mean?  If there's anything we've been taught over the past couple of years, it's that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes and there really is no 'right' way to look.  A butterfly can be beautiful, and so can a kitty cat.  Neither one takes away from the other.  Anyway, last week while shopping, I came across this tight-fitting, knitted midi dress and heard myself saying, ''ugh, wish I could wear that''.  And that was pretty much the moment I decided to practice what I preach.  Skip forward a few days and I'm hanging out in a glasshouse, donning new-in accessories by Aldo and wearing that very same midi dress...

My reasons for lusting after the dress but keeping it at arm's length, included being uncertain on midi lengths and also being wary of the tight-fit.  I could have gone on with the reasons, but there's very little that would have achieved.  I'm starting to see there are two types of reasons why we avoid items of clothing and/or trends.  They include having a legitimate excuse (eg. financial, genuine dislike, feeling indifferent etc.), or just not being sure you can wear it, can 'pull it off'.  But here's the thing - you absolutely can.  There's no right way to wear something, no right body type, no right anything.  Or more to the point, there's no wrong anything!

I adore fashion, but in between all of the rules, regulations, tips and trends, it's so important to remember how inclusive it can be - if you let it be.  Nobody is saying no to you; wear the things you're lusting after and enjoy every moment of them on your body!

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this look in the comments below, as well as whether there's any type of clothing you've always avoided?  And if you're feeling brave, please do share the reason why you've always avoided it!

  3. Looking so posh! Those shoes are everything! Wish we had Aldo in Adelaide.

  4. I always avoid anything tight, purely because I like to feel comfortable haha. I also stay away from Midi Dresses too, because I'm tiny! But girl, you work this SO well xx

  5. I'm in love with those shoes!! <3

  6. I mean personally I think that midi dress really suits you and looks great on you. I so get tired of all the fashion 'rules' out there as well, although I still get caught in the whole "I can't pull it off" way of thinking unfortunately. I am trying to really go against that though!

  7. I couldn't agree more here. I too dreaded away from certain styles and fits for a long time only to realize it isn't as difficult to pull off as I make it in my head! I feel you look stunning from H to T in that midi dress, you should wear them more often!
    I hope you’re having a smooth sailing week! :)

  8. I totally agree with this, babe- we're taught what to wear for our body types, age, gender, etc. WEAR WHAT YOU LIKE!

  9. Wow Gabrielle you look STUNNING! I love the dress and boots.

  10. Such a gorgeous outfit, you always look beautiful and I love this post! We should do what we want and not worry about what other people think and the same goes for outfits - we need to wear what we feel confident in and powerful in, not wear something because it's fashionable etc....

Love the post and hope you're having a lovely day.

  11. I tend to stay away from trends in general because I prefer investing in pieces that I can wear all the time. That said, that pair of boots is stunning!

  12. You look gorgeous! Love the boots!

  13. Love this - I always try to make sure I stop myself when I have those 'I cant wear that' thoughts, because when someone says it to me I'm the first to say 'of course you can!'. This dress is gorgeous on you and the sunglasses are amazing!

  14. Sometimes it's so nice to break your own rules and just go for it because once you do, you feel relieved and a lot more happier. I love that you went for this dress because it looks amazing on you.
Hope you're having a great day!

  15. Gabrielle you look smashing as always and I love your message of bucking the rules when it comes to fashion. I actually avoid trends and make up my own rules based on what I like to wear since my style is kind of tomboy meets granny chic.

  16. I honestly can't imagine why you would ever think you couldn't wear that dress - it looks amazing on you! I want it! I agree though, just wear whatever you want because who cares, really? If it makes you feel good, that's all that matters.

  17. You look so stunning in this! I know what you mean about avoiding certain clothes because we tell ourselves we can't, and you're right it can be a little ridiculous. It takes the fun out of fashion.

  18. Omg those boots! I love everything about this look. The dress looks stunning on you! Beautiful photography. <3

  19. YES. I used to avoid so many things because I 'couldn't pull it off'. Most of my insecurity came from my own ideas about my body and not having confidence (ie. my arms don't look good in that, this shows my tummy, etc.). Once I took control of that and learned to LOVE my body through taking care of it, I also gained the confidence to wear just about anything. It's all about how it makes YOU feel.
Thanks for spreading the love Gabrielle :).

  20. You look absolutely incredible in this dress, Gabrielle. You are spot on, you absolutely CAN (wear that)!

  21. You looking absolutely stunning in the all black outfit and the heels are sexy. I love the glow chain in the heels. Your look is just perfect...:)

  22. What a perceptive post. Fabulous photos, too.
I used to avoid leggings because my legs are, er, the opposite of tall and slim. However, I now almost live in them and choose stylish tunic tops to cover my tum and upper thighs and I wear heels for a little extra height. Happy I made the jump.

  23. I love what you said about butterflies and kitty cats both being beautiful, so eye opening! Why on earth did you ever think you couldn't wear that dress? You look beautiful in it!

  24. Totally agree with you, Gabrielle! We can, and we should always remember it!
Oh, and this outfit is simply perfection (and so sexy!), love it!

  25. I have always avoided tight fits because I didn't like the way my belly looked. Of course now, after two kids, I laugh at what I thought was a "belly" back then, still I tend to avoid tight fits.

  26. Absolutely majestic photos! I like your. I love this dress!!!!
    Have a lovely day

  27. I love this post Gabrielle and couldn't agree more - the only person who thinks we can't pull certain things off is ourselves and you've proved how amazing you can look going out of your comfort zone with something you wouldn't usually choose here with this dress which looks so great on you!
    Amy xx

  28. You look so stylish as always! I typically avoid trends because I find it hard to keep up with all the changes, and as I get older I prefer more classic silhouettes. But I agree, we shouldn't let our fears or others dictate what we should wear! What a great post!

    Jenny // Geeky Posh

  29. Absolutely adore this post. It's crazy how often we're plagued with thinking that we can't wear things; I'm gradually changing my way of thinking as I'm getting older, but I have a way to go.. As always, amazing look - I love love love those boots!

    // xx

  30. This is a great confidence-boosting post Gabrielle! You are right, we shouldn't listen to the little voices in our heads that say we can't wear something - harder to do than to say of course, but you've done it with this dress so we should all try! By the way the dress looks gorgeous on your figure, you were right to pick it up - and those shoes, wow!

  31. OMG those shoes!!!!!! I totally agree that we should wear what we like, people tell me all the time they couldn’t pull off my style but they should because it’s mine they should find their own lol.

  32. I remember how once my husband asked me why I never wear one particular combo (midi skirt and ankle boots) and I told him that this combo makes legs look shorter- his reply was: but I know how long your legs are! Point taken. We all have ideas about what is flattering and what is not but in reality we don't know until you try...and rules are meant to be broken.

You look absolutely gorgeous in this midi dress. The shoes are simply wow! Such a stunning combo!!!!!

  33. Hello!
I also think so there are no rules each one should use according to their personality and how they like to feel.
The dress is beautiful and looks great on you, I love the sunglasses !!!

  34. This post is so true! It's easy to glance at your wardrobe with the mindset that you can't wear something because it won't suit you or whatever, but why wouldn't it suit you? Like there must have been a reason you bought it in the first place. Like with this dress, it's absolutely gorgeous and suits your really well, and you pair it off with the bag and shoes flawlessly. I have a bunch of dresses in my wardrobe that I have the attitude of "I can't wear that", but after this I think I most probably can. Also, I adore the shoes and have checked them out online - they also have them in orange, what!

  35. Loving the elegance of this outfit dear. The fit of dress is so perfect on you, chic and sexy.

  36. I totally agree and you look fab. I think a lot boils down to being confident and not worrying about how others perceive you.

  37. Oh my GOD love those boots are amazing (I love the pop of colour on the back!!), you've styled them so perfectly!

  38. Stepping out of our comfort zone feels a bit confusing in the begging but it's necessary especially when it comes to fashion. I completely agree with you, if we like a specific type of clothing or item we should not be scared on wearing it, we can pull off anything we put our minds to. You are looking fierce in this dress, why did you think you couldn't pull this off? It's fits you perfectly! Plus, my compliments on the gorgeous Aldo boots :)

  39. I totally agree that sometimes it really pays to push yourself out of your comfort zone. Plus it never hurts to just take something to the changeroom with you to see how it looks - that's free after all! I love a midi length but would shy away from knit dresses myself, so you're out of my comfort zone here too, but you 100% pull it off and I would never have known that you weren't sure about this dress to begin with if you hadn't said so. I think it all comes down to confidence and if you wear something confidently then anyone can make anything look good!

  40. You styled that perfectly! I think you did a good job with making it work. I often have aversions to things too because I don't think they suit me, especially cropped stuff since I gained some weight and bloat a lot. You nailed this though! Love the shoes! You had me scared with the heels on the grate though, ha ha.

  41. You look stunning babe x

  42. You look fabulous Gab ! Love your shoes!

  43. Oh that dress is very cool, not sure why you would hesitate on this one as you have the perfect figure for it. And love it with the sock boots. I so want a pair of these.

  44. Ah I LOOVE your sunglasses. I'm totally going to Aldo to find them :)
Those heels are super sleek too

  58. Loved this post Gabrielle!! Not only because the midi dress looks absolutely amazing on you (as well as the Aldo shoes and shades) but also because of the topic! I think we have all been there, thinking about wearing a certain piece or style and avoiding it because we think it wouldn't look good on us. In my case, I never wear midi or maxi dresses/skirts because I think I'm not tall enough but I think I should put on some high heels and give them a go, right?

Anyway, hope you are enjoying your weekend! ;)

  63. I love that dress on you Gabrielle, and your booties. I think everyone should give things a try. I've just found throughout the years, some things are more complimentary and flattering to a person than other things. That's definitely the case for me.

  64. Totally in love with those booties!! :)

    Can't wait for spring! :)
