Our obsession with cult accessories is a fascinating one. But let's get something straight - we're not discussing trends here. We're talking about cult designer accessories. You know, the coveted pieces that do the rounds on Instagram and every other street style shot. The ones you turn your nose up at first and then over time, become a little more tempted by with each passing day. They play on your mind until eventually, you can't imagine your new season wardrobe without that one item. That, ladies and gents, is the power of a cult designer accessory. And you know what? I'm here for it.
In my case, it was the Louis Vuitton Reversible Belt that caught my eye. Having always shied away from obvious logo prints, this surprised me - and yet here we are. It's subtle enough to complement an outfit and add a touch of luxury to whatever you're wearing. Ultimately, this is how most cult designer accessories garner their popularity, right? Sure, there are some exceptions such as Balenciaga's 'ugly' dad trainers from last year... and yet still the same rule somewhat applies. It's still luxury, but in a different direction, moving with popular culture. One thing is for certain: the simple addition of a 'cult designer accessory' to an outfit can tell a whoooole lot about the style of the person wearing it.

The downside of a cult designer accessory, is that nine times out of ten they're not exactly timeless. They may only last you a few seasons, if that. If you click 'add to basket' knowing this without a bead of sweat dripping down your forehead, then it's all good. But if the very idea leaves you quivering in yourboots sandals, then keep a few things in mind. Firstly, opt for neutral colours to improve the accessory's chance of longevity. Secondly, be mindful of how durable the item is. For example, this reversible belt also comes in blush pink on the flip-side, however the colour transference would be heartbreaking and so instead, I opted for the black version. Finally, don't buy because others are buying. Buy because you adore it and can't imagine your wardrobe without it!
Ahem, so yes there are bigger problems in life than having to decide between loving and hating cult designer accessories. But it's a pretty fun topic to daydream about! I'd love to know if you've ever bought a cult designer accessory, or perhaps have your eye on one? Let me know in the comments below! And give me those juicy, juicy specifics...

If you enjoy it, wear it. That's my opinion anyway. I like how you put it- if you can click the buy button without sweating then go for it. I think the important thing is that the act of buying something comes from the right place, because we love some item, and not because others are buying it. The worst reason for shopping would always be buying something just because others have it or because one is bored. I think if one buys only items ones really loves, one is more likely to wear them often and take good care of them and that is really the goal, whether it comes to clothes or accessories.
ReplyDeleteGenerally speaking, I don't have anything against the cult designer accessories. I think they often add something to the look, and they can look so lux when styled right. The only downside is that I find that sometimes cult designer accessories can take away attention from the look. For example, yesterday I saw a girl wear a cult designer belt (the famous Gucci one) with a dress for a wedding. I don't think it's a good look for a wedding. The belt just doesn't look right with a formal dress, the kind you would wear for a wedding. Curiously enough, designer accessories tend to look better on every day outfits. I also like to see designer belts with blazers.
This LV belt you're wearing is very pretty and subtle, a great choice. I can think of many outfits that would look great with this belt. It looks great styled with that white jumpsuit. You look adorable. This is a great spring styling. The bag and the heels match wonderfully.
Love your belt!
ReplyDeleteI have had love and hate relationship with pearl hair clips that are all over Instagram ad you know what? I can't get enough of them right now, these clips have really grown on me!

It's a cute belt on you and I like it with the eyelet! I agree on your advise to only buy pieces you are sure you will get lots of wear from, and accessories are usually a good bet with that! With my white / blue azur canvas I've never had any colour transfer so I would have gone for the blush back, haha!
ReplyDeleteHope that you are having a great weekend :)

I love a good cult designer accesory! This LV belt is stunning. I must admit I gave into buying the Gucci belt but I've used almost everyday since I bought it. I'm now lusting after the Moschino belt haha x

Quality/investment pieces are certainly better than an abundance of fluff items. I am not usually an LV fan but that belt is so lovely and stylish. It's the perfect touch to your outfit. Happy June! <3
ReplyDeletei wasn't a big fan of logo prints but now i'm enjoying some pieces! love the belt! so pretty!

I loved reading this post and agreed with everything you said about buying designer accessories! In my opinion, if someone is buying something that makes them feel confident and they know they'll get use out of it, then I say go for it! But if they're only buying things because they feel like they have to in order to fit in or follow the trends, then it isn't worth it. Great post! The photos are so beautiful, as well! Thanks for sharing! :)

I'm all for them! There are definitely those key pieces that I have been lusting over for years. I love how you have paired this LV belt. xx

Love the jumpsuit!!! And the belt. I think if it makes you feel good wear it. Just like when the rock stud shoes by Valentino were popping up on insta. People thought then it was just a fad, and now they are considered cult and classic pieces.
ReplyDeleteAaaah, that outfit is just soo dreamy. I love how the yellow underneath is complimenting the bright white suit. And the belt is so classsy! Great job!

I agree!! The LV belt is really pretty and subtle enough. I've never really understood the logo hype, but I do think LV is quite subtle and classic. Really refined and makes a great belt. Love your layering in this outfit too, so chic babe! Xx

I totally understand where you are coming from. I had the same thoughts rolling in my head when I debated between buying an Hermes or Gucci GG belt. However, I feel with any cult favorite thing certain brands have timeless pieces that constantly go in and out of style. Looking at the Hermes H belt that is a completely timeless piece that really hasn't changed much in the years they've produced it (the biggest difference being the colors it now comes in). It really is left to the brand to make a piece timeless, but I agree that most cult favorites will not be timeless. I absolutely love your LV belt and how you've styled it.
ReplyDelete- Avalon from www.simplyavalon.com
For me it can go either way. I think it depends on the piece. I personally prefer to go for the classics when it comes to cult designer accessories bot from a versatility standpoint and getting the most bang for my buck. Your LV belt is fantastic example of the Gabrielle and it looks fabulous with this entire look you have put together. I have a vintage LV crossbody that would coordinate nicely with it ;p
ReplyDeleteI love your belt and how you style it. Photos and you are gorgeous like always. Thank you for inspiration.

Snap! I got my LV belt in January, the exact same one you just got, so I know how you feel! I kept seeing it and falling in love. I have the Gucci too, but I needed something new and the LV was my favourite! I live in it! Love that it's reversible too!

I am here for luxe accessories. Sometimes the simplest Chanel brooch can upgrade an entire outfit; same goes for belts. I love your LV, it so you! I recently splurged on a smallish Gucci belt too and even if I wear it over a 5 dollar dress - it instantly transforms everything. Beautiful photos here, Gabrielle xx

I never purchased one and can't say I am tempted by one at the moment - but that only goes for fashion. I have been tempted by many cult beauty products even though I didn't need them...
ReplyDeleteLinda, Libra, Loca: Beauty, Baby and Backpacking
I think if you love it, WEAR IT- regardless of the brand/price/cult status! Fashion should be fun. I am personally digging this belt- what a great + timeless piece!

Hello Gabrielle
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, a simple luxury accessory of luxury can value all the look we are wearing, adds value to the outfit, other items can even be fast fashion but with a luxury item everything changes, you look wonderful !!

I have been travelling way too much recently, and haven't had the time to indulge in your blog in the longest time. I've finally settled for a bit in Alberta though, and am happy to finallllly be able to read everything again. I have missed the gorgeous photos and text, and wow - I've missed this upgrade in your blog design? Dang, I've been gone for too long. I also definitely love cult designer accessories - so long as they aren't overdone and are overbearing.

Even though cult accessories may last for a couple of seasons I think you should still buy it. Most times if they are in good condition after you have worn them a decade or so later they become collectible items and are sometime worth even more than when you originally purchased them because they have that vintage appeal. You just have to keep it in good condition for a couple of decades.

I agree with you buy when you feel you would totally regret later if you do not buy it Most of my outfits last forever and I use them for several years fashion goes and comes and they are there in my wardrobe and I love wearing them after a long time because it feels like a new piece although it is not I was just missing it. Yes many times I have bought a cult designer accessory and I kept them just like everything else and the brands vary as well Great article babe xoxo Cris

I'm head over heels for your show-stopping outfit darling Gabrielle, and this beautiful belt was sent straight down from babetown and MADE for your magically stylish soul! I have a new-found love affair with LV, it's looking more stunning than ever to me lately, hence why I'm all starry-eyed for this belt! I definitely think if something makes you happy it's 100% worth it. As my hairdresser always says, "there are no shops in heaven!" :) Hope you're having a to die for weekend babe! ♥︎

I usually prefer to stick to more classic/timeless pieces but I have to admit some trendy pieces grow on me the more I see them! One I ended up investing in is the Gucci belt, but for me it was totally worth it as I'll be wearing it for years to come!
ReplyDeleteJenny // Geeky Posh
Okay, you completely sold me on the belt simply because of how you styled it here! Those lacey overalls are gorgeous, and I'm so in love with your pretty long locks! <3

If someone like them - she/he should wear them. It's nice to have some designers, good quality things that you can mix with different styles and outfits. You look absolutely stunning dear xx
ReplyDeleteI definitely think if you're going to invest in something design, like you said, it pays to think about the longevity (and durability) of the item. I'm still astounded by the whole "dad trainer" thing and half think it was just the brand playing a joke on the world, but people still seem to be wearing them! At least people on the internet are, I don't think I've seen anyone in real life wearing them! But in any case, buying a good quality leather belt in a neutral colour palette is always going to be a more sensible choice so I think you've invested wisely!
ReplyDeletelittlehenrylee.net
Oh yesss, LV belt adds glam to every outfit, nice to see you're sporting and talking about it. I like the way how you wear your lace jumpsuit with a belt and a jumper under it. I feel the same with my Hermes irreversible belt, I had to make sure it would only be brown and black colours for longevity. So glad you can relate. Happy hump day!

OMG this was my first ever actually designer piece that I bought, and like you said a cult accessory. But the moment I held it I couldn't justify it more so because I got the wrong size. Ended up returning and buying the Gucci instead. And now I'm kind of getting extremely attracted to it.
ReplyDeleteAnd OMG your jumpsuit is STUNNING!
