Okay, so a debate that has been running throughout the world of content creating over the past few months has been the following: should we still be blogging? With the rise of Instagram bringing in lucrative deals left, right and centre, many are starting to question the purpose of continuing to blog. Sure, it's time consuming, but it's so much more than that. With a share sized pack of Malteesers sitting prettily next to me, I've been brainstorming three reasons as to why I believe keeping your blog alive may just be the best thing you can do for your content creating journey. And perhaps now more than ever before...
Warning: i'm totally biased on this one. I secured my current job as a content writer at Farfetch via the body of work visible through A Glass Of Ice. Secondly, I've recently launched a new photographic service; of which my blog serves as the perfect landing page for potential clients to peruse. If you're blogging and creating content online, it's likely you have other creative pursuits. If that's a hard yes from you, then your website is well worth keeping around to showcase your talents!

Contrary to popular belief, brand collaborations are still very much thriving outside of social media. Some of my most exciting opportunities have arrived via my blog, and perhaps even more so now than before Instagram became Collab Central. This is due to various factors including SEO, attaining a permanent mention online, reaching a creator's more loyal audience and so much more. If you don't have a media kit, now is the time to create one so that potential brand partners are able to see the fabulous results you can deliver via your blog

Do you have a cohesive theme across your social media? Me too. And you know what, sometimes it can be restricting. There, I said it. The outcome is very much worth it and I'll admit to adoring my current aesthetic for Instagram, however that doesn't take away my pure and unadulterated joy at being able to move in any direction with A Glass Of Ice! I find that styling and editing techniques in particular are more 'free and easy' here on my blog. If you're still not convinced, you could perhaps try playing around a little more on your blog and if you adore the outcome - apply it to your Instagram feed! Ta-dah! A win-win...

Above all else, I feel as though having a blog/website of your own to create content is crucial for creative development. It's pretty much how most of us started out before Instagram even began to show signs of blossoming. And besides, the beauty of social media and content creation in general is how everything is constantly moving, progressing and evolving. The flip side of this, is that a style or perhaps even an entire platform can be here today, gone tomorrow. Your blog however? Here for as long as you please. Completely agree with you. I think a blog is a great way as well to express ourselves more fully than even our other social media pages. It's a great place to call all our own. This dress is so cute, I really love it x
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more! I think people need to reflect why they have a blog, is it because they want to be creative or they want a huge follow? Obviously instagram is better for interaction with your followers, but there's a great freedom in having your own website where you're in charge! And heeey, adore this outfit. I need to wear a headband soon! Xx

What a cute summer dress! I love the pink headband with it! :) While I like I can quickly get so much inspiration from a scroll through my Instagram feed, and I've met some great people through Instagram, blogging will always be my favourite and first love! :)
ReplyDeleteHope that your week is going well :)

I was always more blog oriented, I tried the Instagram thing and realized that it isn't for me. I love that blog is something you can always return to. Some bloggers go months without posting and it doesn't hurt their blog at all, sometimes it just makes their readers miss them more. I think it's all about finding what works for us and our readers. There is nothing wrong with posting once a month, for example. Different formats and schedule work better for different blogs. For me daily blogging is the best options because it helps me organize myself better somehow.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that a blog can be like a digital CV. I actually find it really helpful to have a place online where I can search my old articles. Sure, I could do it on computer too, write and store my thoughts but there is something to be said about sharing. Blogging can be such a wonderful tool to enhance our writing skills- as you yourself proved. Just owning a blog can be a huge plus when applying for a job, because it proves we obviously have some skills (computer, editing and similar set of skills). Instagram is less likely to be taken seriously if you're applying for a job that isn't a typical influencer one.
This is a beautiful outfit btw. I love your pink headband, such a feminine and chic accessory. That floral dress is gorgeous too.
I totally agree with you... I like to blog more than Instagram because I can share more and reach more people over time.

I definitely agree with this Gabrielle! A lot of brands don't just want Instagram and I definitely feel like having my blog is an extra string to my bow, plus I love writing!

Won't lie, I started blogging because my friend who was doing it got a free leather jacket and I thought that's so cool! But later on I just fell for the idea of having my own place to share ideas of stories, never looking at it as a career to not kill the fun, but more like a freedom of expression and that's why I still love doing it, with any opportunities coming along just being a great perks <3
ReplyDeleteLackaDaisy
I agree with you, that's why I love so much my blog and blogging.
ReplyDeleteLove the pics btw!!

Funny, I have had this discussion over the years with friends and associates many times. There are times when I have thought about terminating my blog but the only reason I have kept my blog is purely because of enjoyment but also career opps. I shifted into a whole other freelance job arena from my blog alone and I am thankful that I kept it.
ReplyDeleteFor me it is jsut such a good outlet! I love having a place to chatter online, it's so valuable! :)

Gorgeous outfit! I love combination of colors and how you style all of the pieces

I actually wrote a post recently with my thoughts on blogging. I was a late adopter to Instagram and have never grown attached to it because I just feel like it's too superficial. I prefer blogging and long form content because it's just a better means of expression for me. Besides I have concerns about Instagram's shady privacy policies and frequent outages.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you! Thanks for sharing this post with us. You look stunning, as always. :)

Have a great day ahead!
ReplyDeletetotally totally agree with you. Instagram is big now but is it gonna last tomorrow? I don't know. Instead I am sure of my blog! For me, having the freedom to create content the way I feel expressing myself (through photographs, stories and so on) is my favourite part of blogging. Secondly, there is the blog community which appears much more honest and friendly than the one on social media.
ReplyDeletePlus it has become quite reassuring to me to go back reading some posts of my favourite blog (yours included (: )
Have a lovely weekend!

I couldn't agree more. I believe that the blog is the foundation for everything else. Instagram is only an addition and when we are actually in control of our websites, Instagram is highly unreliable and your account get get shut down any day only because...
ReplyDeleteThe constant getting blocked for liking too much, for commenting too much - when IG keeps praising the engagement and then punishes users for actually engaging. One day I went to follow an account just to realise that IG blocked this feature for me. I sent over 100 messages and no one ever responded to me. I got unblocked after a month! Just imagine those who only have IG and the account gets closed?! and there is no one to even speak to as their customer service does not exist.
It's also almost impossible to grown IG regardless how great the content is,unless one has another 20 years available for this.... xx

love your thoughts about blogging, as for me I think blogging has a richer content rather than Instagram.
ReplyDeleteFor me there are more opportunities in blogging rather than Instagram. Great post!

Gorgeous post Hun! I completely agree, I love my blog so much and think blogging is such an underrated platform these days. Bloggers need to be appreciated more and use their platforms for good! Gorgeous post as always Hun, your pictures are stunningggg :)

Gabrielle, it is quite symbolic that I am reading this blog post right after publishing my first one in 5+ months. So many times I felt guilty about putting it in the back seat (I had to) but it's so so good to be back. I am extremely excited and I have missed blogging a lot. Not only creating content but reading inspiring and high-quality blog posts like yours. MISSED YOU!

I couldn't agree more with your reasons! Although Instagram is great, it's not the same as having a space online that is all your own. With social media changing it's also hard to know how long a platform will be around. I really love blogging and I can definitely see myself doing it for many years to come! And I adore these photos! Your pink headband is really cute.

I definitely think Instagram is much more popular in this day and age because people are used to constantly scrolling and moving onto the next thing. Regardless, I still love updating my blog. It allows me to write more and also sometimes I feel that I have the same conversation with so many people, that it also can serve as a resource. I'm also trying to work on creating a voice for myself, and writing helps with that.

I love blogging and I don't plan on stopping any time soon. It got me a lot of fulfillment and I agree with your reasons to keep blogging.

I am 100% with you Gabrielle. As a content writer myself, I must say it is so crucial to have your own creative outlet. Not only is it a wonderful way to showcase what you are most passionate about, but it also gives your potential employers an idea of how you'll be able to create content for others. Beautiful photography here, by the way. You look amazing xx

I agree. I'm an over 40 blogger and I really still do better with the blog than with other forms of social media... and I like creating content that has more substance to it than what you can do on Instagram.
ReplyDeleteI could not agree more hun plus unlike any other platforms, with our blogs we actually own the content ie our pictures stay our pictures and that very important in this Industry :) xx
ReplyDeletewww.fashionjazz.co.za
Couldn't agree more. I love blogging so much more than posting an instagram pic. Was lovely to read all the other comments too. Hope you are having a great week.

You said it so well! Sometimes, I also ponder whether to continue blogging but thinking of similar reasons to yours especially the creativity part keeps me going. I like that I own a space in the online world through my blog and can express my thoughts freely. Love your baby doll dress, you totally look like a doll.
ReplyDeletewww.busyandfab.com
I completely agree, plus you own thatcontent on your blog! Instagram is no guarantee and also it is next to impossible to grow on instagram. Used to be better only gets worse and worse. THe blog will always be there.
ReplyDelete'Online CV' is super spot on! Makes me glad I have my blog :)

I love my blog, and I literally blog every single day even if I'm only post every other day. I still do blogging stuff but your so right there are still tons of collaborations happening. To be honest this is the busiest I've been in a long time. I am also speding more time honing my photography skill, spending less time being perfect and more time doing what I enjoy.
