... softly, of course. Because I'm in no position to be telling you what you should be doing. Of course not. Because you have more respect for yourself than that. Get where I'm going with this? It's funny, in times of reflection you'll often hear people rediscovering a drive to further themselves, perhaps a craving for change within, or the polar opposite - expressing a desire to slow down. But how often do you hear people discussing their self-worth? How often do we ask ourselves: do I value myself? It's a deep question, I know. But it's worthwhile asking yourself this - and preferably before the lockdown ends and we're all thrust back into the real world like a slap to the face with a wet fish. If you're prepared to get a little deep with me, read on...
These thoughts stemmed from reading Self Love & Spiritual Alchemy, a self-help book I'm still (happily) working my way through, before most likely starting from the beginning again! Sometimes all it takes is a different perspective and for someone to ask you a difficult (albeit important) question. So, let me be that person for you: how is your self-worth? And more importantly, why?
The further I delve into the topic, the more I realise how a lack of self-worth can trip you up much more than you realise with your life goals. Likewise, only good things can come from improving your self-worth. These unsettling times do have a silver lining: less noise and less input. It's time to focus on you for you.
So, I'll ask you again: how is your self-worth?

''Self worth is the opinion you have about yourself and the value you place on yourself.''
There are so many different ways to find your answer to this question. However, something I've found very useful to focus on, is whether you're constantly putting people before you - and to your detriment. There's being kind, and then there's simply not valuing yourself. This isn't about confidence, and it's not about control. It's about loving yourself as much as you love other people. So, the million dollar question: how do we improve our sense of self-worth? I'm only at the beginning of my journey, but I've shared some suggestions below to help get you thinking...

This is such a wonderful post, that self-help book sounds like a great read. I had a habit of putting others before myself until I would reach a breaking point, so working on that has helped immensely. You look beautiful in these photos!

What a fun hat, I love the vintage vibe with the bow, especially when paired with the pleated skirt! I think self worth is so important. It's a fine line I find! I'm trying to build up my boys but I don't want them to have massive egos either, haha! I want them to be confident in themselves but not judge those who aren't as skilled at say schoolwork as they are - I know my older boy needs to work on that, he's commented that his brother isn't doing the same work as him a few times and upset him, but they are at very different developmental stages! A work in progress for sure.
ReplyDeleteHope you are having a great week :)

I think it's such a big journey. We have been constantly put into competition one to another since early age, so naturally our self-worth might change very often.
ReplyDeleteThis time of reflection is perfect to restart with a more positive attitude towards our self. My self awakening journey started last year and I can see how it is swifting from 'me being very judgy' on myself to 'me becoming more soft' and accepting my shadow self.
Moon guides and the moon cycle has helped a lot too!
Also I am really curious on the book you are reading, sounds very up my street!!

I think we all need to read this post! Self-worth is a very tricky topic, because culturally and a lot of the time, self-worth is seen so negatively. Like we shouldn't put so much emphasis on ourselves. But that is so wrong, and we should always ask ourselves the questions you brought up! Focussing on our strength is super important, and stopping to beat ourselves up for little things too. I hope you discover much more on this journey, Gabrielle! :)
ReplyDeleteTake care!

I feel so very blessed to say that for the vast majority of my life I have had a very high level of self-worth. There have been instances where I haven't felt great about my appearance or myself, but thankfully, they have literally just been that, instances. Brief moments that fade away after I pray about it. I love what you shared here xxx <3

This is such an important topic - I think you can build self worth by doing things that make you feel accomplish and being as true to yourself as you can. PS: Your photos are absolutely stunning!
ReplyDeleteOoh yes, this post is good Gabrielle! I've been working lately on not being so quick to criticize myself over the little things. It's so important to have grace with ourselves (ESPECIALLY in times like these!).

I adore this post Gabrielle. I'm definitely guilty of always putting others before myself and burying my feelings to one side and it's something I'm working on!
