Ooh! The great debate! It's been about a year and a half now since I moved to London and this is something I've pretty much only just realised. I stopped counting the days after about three weeks of living in the capital and haven't looked back since! So, here's the thing: there are both upsides and downsides to both city and countryside living, but having lived in both locations over the past decade, I feel as though I know (err.. somewhat) what I'm talking about. My main reasons for moving to London included career goals, a relationship and a desire for more. I wasn't sure what 'more' looked or felt like, but I knew I wanted it...
As it so happens, almost instantly I felt that desired sense of 'more' we all crave from time to time. Life was and still is (uh, besides the pandemic) more exciting, faster and goals (both career and personal) are achieved much quicker. There are more resources at my fingertips and in general, more activity to stimulate my mind. If, like me, your mind jumps from thought to thought and needs to be busy - city living is sure to scratch that itch. However, there have been a couple of other iiiiinteresting developments I hadn't anticipated. For starters, I'm now idolising countryside decor and outfit styling, living spaces and outdoor activities. Less surprisingly, I'm still addicted to National Trust properties and manor homes. Thankfully London still has these (hello Chiswick House & Gardens!) - though usually minus the sprawling grounds. On a more personal level, I miss living so close to my family. Luckily, we all make the effort to see each other regularly (outside of lockdown, of course) because I truly can't imagine life without seeing my mum on the regular! Oh and one final point - styling. As is the case with most cities, you can wear what you want and dress as extravagantly as you like and passers-by are unlikely to even notice. Bliss.

You look gorgeous Gabrielle! I'm definitely more of a city girl, I just like having things to do! Although in my dreams I'd love a little countryside house to escape to on the weekend!

I'm a city person too! You're so right that more things happen in the city and faster too. Everything is available too, like if you want to have pizza at 11 pm it's easy to fix. Living outside the city buzz requires more planning and less spontaneity. With that said though, love to spend in the countryside. It's all about balance! Xx
ReplyDeleteI am a complete city person but love some country breaks in between x

What cute shoes! I love the casual vibe they add to the pretty summer dress! :)
ReplyDeleteWe live pretty close to the city now, closer than where I grew up, but I still don't think we are city living. We are pretty firmly int eh suburbs, haha! It's nice that we are close to a lot of green spaces, although not quite country living!
Hope that your week is going well :)

Although I live in the suburbs currently, and would probably hate living in the city, and am definitely enamoured with, and set on, the idea of living in the countryside one day, I can totally see the pros and cons of both. I concur with being able to dress elegantly in the city though, it's definitely something I love!!

I grew up in the countryside but for so many years moved to the city and I'm now definitely more of a city girl. I love the vibes of a busy city! :)
ReplyDeleteYou're so pretty!

I would love to live in London. It's such an amazing city, and it's great that you can visit so many fab places in a short train / tube journey! xo

Living in London versus the countryside must be definitely very different! It's quite useful to be in the city for new experiences and opportunities. However the English countryside is such a peaceful place to be... It's hard to pick just one place! Right now I'm in the city and enjoying it, but I wish I was closer to nature so that I could go into the countryside whenever I wanted on days off.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week ahead Gabrielle! x

Love this post Gabrielle, I have lived in both the city and the country and I personally am happiest where I live now in a smaller city with all the amenities but still feeling like I have space and being around nature xx

I would say I'm definitely a city girl. After living almost my whole life in a very big city such as Buenos Aires, I'm so used to that fast rythim of life. Now that I live in Zagreb I think that I have found the perfect balance because it's not a very big city so that it becomes chaotic but you also have some nice countryside near by perfect for a weekend getaway in nature :)
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely week ahead Gabrielle!

ReplyDeleteI LOVE that dress from Asos!!!!!! I love he empire waist, the colour, the daisy print, the flare, drape, the feminine ruffle and bow at the neckline, the sleeves, and the over all swingy airy summer look. You look gorgeous wearing it in all of the photos above.
ReplyDeleteI live in an area that has visiting tourists in the summer but is relatively rural in the winter.
I love the colour and bustle in the summer, the quiet in the winter, and it's closeness to the water year-round.

I’m definitely a country girl and live in an area surrounded by fields and idyllic walks for us and our dog. I love the slower pace of life, and that I only live a 5 minute journey from my workplace.
ReplyDeleteThe city would be far too hectic for me . . . but each to their own, and where they find inner happiness!

ReplyDeleteFascinating article. Lovely to read that you are so happy in the city.
I've never been able to choose! I currently live in the city, and like the relative anonymity that comes with that.
ReplyDeleteId love to live in the country side its so beautiful and peaceful maybe when the kids are all grown up
ReplyDeleteI have the best of both - I live almost in the countryside but only half an hour from a city - perfect!
